Low frequency, high utility: Glass Tag Thermosensor for industry and Animal ID applications

LF (low frequency) glass tags offer specific benefits under demanding conditions, whether high-temperature or high-acidity industrial environments, or in use with live animals. Now, Smartrac expands these benefits with temperature-sensing capabilities.

When embedded in a robust glass shell, Smartrac’s Glass Tags offer reliable read ranges even in the harsh environments frequently found in industry and logistics. Other versions serve as a flexible and reliable solution for pet, livestock and fish identification, pigeon racing and the identification of laboratory animals.

Identification plus temperature measurement
Glass Tag Thermosensor, the latest addition to the Glass Tag product range, is suitable for implants and for use in virtually all liquids or even vacuum-like conditions. It therefore covers both these application areas while offering one fundamentally new capability: accurate and reliable temperature sensing and storing, without the need for a dedicated battery-powered sensor or data-logger. In cold chain or industrial environments for example, this innovative, passive sensing RFID product can wirelessly measure the temperature inside closed non-metallic bins, jars or chambers -- whether the items to be monitored are in manufacturing facilities, laboratories or containers in transit. Similarly, pet owners and laboratory operators can not only identify their animals but at the same time also effortlessly monitor their body temperature.

IC with integrated data logging capability
The only precondition is the availability of a reader that can display the temperature information provided by the Excelio EL9265 IC, which is fully encapsulated in biocompatible glass. The chip offers 2048 Bit EEPROM, including 1792 bits of user memory that can be used for storing up to 50 temperature measurements. System integrator customers receive the information needed to calibrate, calculate and display the temperature in the readers they use.


Superior quality and temperature range
One thing that differentiates Glass Tag Thermosensor from its competition -- besides its “Made in Germany” high quality -- is its wide range of measurable temperatures. The new sensing tag boasts an overall operating temperature of -25 to +85°C (storage temperature -40° to +85°C) and allows user-specific calibration of the preferred temperature range for improved accuracy. In typical animal applications, when calibrated for a temperature range of +30 to +45°C, accuracy is as high as ±0.05°C.

Glass Tag Thermosensor is available for volume delivery in one compact form factor (2.12 x 12mm), two frequency options (134.2 kHz and 125 kHz for industrial applications), several personalization options (e.g. ISO 11784/85), and with an optional Parylene coating. Volume deliveries are available as of now.
