The food industry and digital transformation

Phoenix, Arizona
RFID Journal Live 2019

On-demand meal delivery services. Omnichannel grocery. Gas Station Gourmet. Food recalls.

Approximately 30% of all food produced for human consumption is wasted. There is not another industry out there that would allow for that level of inefficiency, and it is becoming more complex to service new shopping demands every day. Consumers are looking for fresh food and delivered meals on demand -everywhere - even in gas stations and drug stores. In order to give us all that we want and when we want it, margin pressured grocers, restaurants and convenience stores have to find ways to service these new models, all while managing challenges in labor shortages, food freshness and food safety.

"When the industry first looked at RFID technologies, iPhones didn't exist and sensor technology was still nascent. Now, we can affordably and reliably tag 100% of all items"

In order to drive these new models and optimize profits, the food industry is actively exploring better ways to manage their inventory, drive frictionless retail and provide traceability throughout a complex supply chain.  When the industry first looked at RFID technologies, iPhones didn't exist and sensor technology was still nascent. Now, we can affordably and reliably tag 100% of all items with innovations in on-metal, on-liquid and microwave safe solutions, inlays specially designed to respond to these challenges and we will continue to push the boundaries of integrated packaging. Combine this milestone with the incredible advancement of digital capabilities like predictive analytics, blockchain, and sensor technology, data sets have an exponential impact on efficiently delivering new models.

At a time when disruption is inevitable and margins are disappearing, intelligent labels are a proven solution to both service the new consumer models and drive new margin opportunities through elimination of waste, automation and supply chain optimization.
